SINGER and music video director Sponch Makhekhe's new song, Baba Wami, is making waves overseas.
The Soweto-born and bred musician, whose real name is Muntu Maseko (34), spoke to SunBuzz about the single that was released in November 2022.
The musician said the song is doing well overseas including Canada, Texas, Brazil and Australia.
“There’s a radio station in Texas that approached me. They don’t even understand the lyrics, but they love it. They asked me to email it so they can playlist it on radio.
“My social media is buzzing. I get direct messages (DMs) every day, with people saying they love the song,” Sponch said.

He said the song is doing well on SA Music Downloads, sitting on two million downloads.
“It’s really travelling on its own without me even pushing it,” he said.
Sponch said the song is now available on all digital streaming platforms, adding that it’s dedicated to his late father John Manalo.
“I only got to spend a short time with him, but I learnt a lot from him. The song basically says my dad left me while I was young, but the things he taught me remain,” he said.
The musician has just launched his record label called 10260.
“The name of the label is taken from my home address, where it all started for me," he said.
Sponch said Baba Wami is the first song he released under his label.
He is also well-known for being a music video director.
He’s worked on some of the biggest amapiano songs such as Kokota Piano by Bizizi and Kaygee, Ama BBW by DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, and MFR Soul’s Spharaphara.
