I AM deeply troubled that my baby was not placed on a liver transplant waiting list despite his severe need for help.

These were the sad words of Ofentse Kganyago, the mother of Kutlwano Kgosietsile, as she bid farewell to her nine-month-old baby boy during his funeral service.

The funeral service was held in Tsunami in Ga-Rankuwa, Tshwane on Thursday, 30 March and baby Kutlwano was buried at Kgabalatsane Cemetery.

Kutlwano was diagnosed with biliary atresia and liver cirrhosis when he was six months old, a condition which impacted his physical development.

Ofentse told Daily Sun that her baby had recently experienced liver failure. She expressed her devastation at losing her son because of the delay in getting a liver transplant.

"Besides that, the doctors told me that he first needed to gain some weight. I am asking myself why the process was delayed for my child," she said.

She said it was confusing that Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital diagnosed her baby with jaundice when she first took him there.

"They then referred him to Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, where he was diagnosed with biliary atresia and liver cirrhosis," said Ofentse.

Ofentse, who was at the hospital when her son died, said she was still in shock and disbelief over his passing.

"I wish him to rest well and I observed a sign of peace in the rain when he was being buried, which I believe signifies his welcome into heaven," said the mother.

Neighbour Tinny Moja said she witnessed the mother's struggles to get her son the help he needed and praised her strength and resilience.

"We witnessed the mother's struggle to get help for her son from hospital to hospital with no success. We saw how strong and positive she was as a mother and continues to be strong. Only God knows," said Tinny.
