THE Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Undercover Reaction Unit, in conjunction with the cops, arrested a man and a woman for possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Selby, Joburg.

The team followed up on a tip-off about a suspect wanted for the murder of illegal miners (zama zamas) at Crystal Park in Benoni, Ekurhuleni on Thursday, 11 May.

The information led the team to the suspect’s residence at Phola informal settlement in Selby.

“Upon their arrival at the informal settlement, the officers were met with gunfire and they returned fire. During the gunfight, the officers managed to arrest a male and a female suspect,” said JMPD in a statement.

The woman was carrying a black bag and when searched, a Norinco 45 ACP pistol with filed serial number, a magazine with six rounds, a hand grenade and 15 shotgun shells were found in her possession.

“The male suspect was found in possession of one 9mm pistol, 22 9mm ammunition, two R5 ammunition and two 223 Remington rifle ammunition," said the JMPD.

"Upon inspection, it was discovered that the firearm was wanted as per the Ikageng Police case."

The duo will appear in court soon.
