ACTRESS and dancer Lorcia Cooper believes coloured people in Mzansi are often subjected to negative stereotypes.

However, the 47-year-old Lorcia said the upcoming SABC2 drama series, Paradys, is set to do things differently by embracing the coloured communities without relying on stereotypes.

Lorcia, who is known for her roles in popular TV series Backstage, Scandal!, Lockdown (2017-2020) and Red Ink (2024), as well as films Hey Boy (2003) and Zulu Wedding (2017), became emotional while speaking about the new show and how closely attached she is to it.

"This is only the second time in my career ever, that I've been on a show with coloured people. Thank you for allowing us to tell our stories that don't involve violence, drugs or like other channels where we have to clean up our Afrikaans to be palatable," she said.

Lorcia said the show is the first of its kind in Mzansi on free-to-air TV.

"It's the first time when there's representation of the coloured people in their true form where their different dialect of Afrikaans is spoken. This show is history, she said.

The actress stated that being given this opportunity is a major highlight in her career.

"I think it's a story where coloured people are telling a story and don't get to be stereotyped and we are trying to tell human stories that anyone can relate to," she added.
