The academy aims to support young artists by teaching them the skills they need to succeed in the music industry.

GRAMMY Award-winning DJ Black Coffee, whose real name is Nathi Maphumulo, celebrated his birthday by opening the Black Coffee Music Academy in Sandhurst, Joburg.

The academy aims to support young artists by teaching them the skills they need to succeed in the music industry.

Black Coffee, who recently turned 49 years old, said he was inspired to start the academy after discovering that his son, Esona Maphumulo, became a DJ.

"I didn't know he wanted to be a DJ. It made me see there's a lot of talent but not enough guidance," said Black Coffee.

The academy will teach students about music and also the business side of being an artist. "It's not just about making music. Graduates will learn about branding, performing, and acting professionally," explained Black Coffee.

Lungie, who is Black Coffee's sister, expressed her gratitude and highlighted the event's fundraising success.

"Our goal was to reach at least R4 million through table sales and the auction, and we are almost there, we've reached R3,1 million. Happy birthday, my brother. Thank you for lending a hand. I also want to thank everyone who contributed to making this possible," she said.
