LEGENDARY Mzansi composer and producer Lebo M marked his 61st birthday in grand style with an emotional and star-studded tribute to his life and legacy.
The world-renowned maestro, whose real name is Lebohang Morake, was honoured with The Dream and The Dreamer, an immersive exhibition showcasing his extraordinary journey in music, film, and global impact.
The event took place on Thursday night, 17 July at Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank, north of Joburg. It brought together media personalities, musicians, and close friends to celebrate a career that continues to inspire generations.

Lebo M is best known for his iconic vocal and songwriting work on global blockbusters such as The Lion King, The Power of One, and Outbreak, as well as several major stage productions.
The exhibition featured rare and personal photographs, memorabilia, and visuals that trace his rise from humble beginnings in Soweto to becoming one of Africa's biggest musical exports. It also gave fans a glimpse into the man behind the music.
During the celebration, Lebo M surprised many with the announcement of his upcoming autobiography, which promises to reveal untold stories from his fascinating journey.

"It's been a lovely transition for me. We had a great year. Last year, I had my first concert in Cape Town, then went on tour, and even performed at the Hollywood Bowl. That project earned us three Emmy nominations, and it's just the beginning. We're now planning a second concert in Cape Town and then a world tour," he said.
Speaking about the photos that were displayed at the exhibition, he said he didn't have a clue how the photos were taken.
"I have no say in the making of the film, and I like it that way. What is special to me about it is that Blaq Smith has been documenting my life for years, travelling with me around the world, and this is about his work and me being the subject," he said.

Reflecting on another career milestone, Lebo M recalled his participation in The Lion King's 30-year celebration, a special event that reunited the original cast of the Broadway production and the animated film.
"That was a major highlight. It reminded me of how far the journey has come," he added with pride.
