The DA in Nelson Mandela Bay isn’t going down without a fight as Mayor faces potential removal.

THE DA in Nelson Mandela Bay isn't going down without a fight.

Gloves are off as Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Retief Odendaal faces potential of removal from office by a vote of no confidence.

The ANC and EFF are calling for the removal of Odendaal and their motion will be heard on Friday, 26 May.

The DA held a "Hands Off Mayor Retief Odendaal Rally" in front of City Hall in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday, 20 May.

The aim of the rally was to convince residents to support the mayor as it appears that smaller parties have turned their backs on him.

DA Eastern Cape leader Andrew Whitfield, said the multi-party coalition government have made great strides towards turning the fortunes of Nelson Mandela Bay around over the past eight months.

"This motion is nothing more than a blatant power grab by a desperate ANC and EFF cabal to get their hands on the city's R18 billion budget. The well-being of the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay has absolutely nothing to do with their actions," he said.

He said the parties have shown that they are prepared to do whatever it takes to secure power.

"It's a shame that their aim is to create a puppet mayor to take the blame while they loot with impunity.

"We are still committed to the coalition government and putting the residents first. Our door remains open to further negotiations. The DA will not roll over and allow the corrupt ANC/EFF Doomsday Coalition to bring this city to its knees. We will fight to the bitter end for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay," said Whitfield.

Whitfield was joined by DA Federal Council chair, Helen Zille, and the party's provincial chairman Yusuf Cassim.
