THE Bez Valley Recreation Centre has allegedly been turned into a dumping site.

This after 156 survivors of the Marshalltown fire were moved to the centre.

According to DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Social Development, Refiloe Nt'sekhe, the Department of Social Development failed to provide adequate shelter for the fire survivors living at the recreation centre.

Nt'sekhe said the centre was misled to accommodate the survivors for 72 hours as per the Disaster Management Act, but instead, the centre has been forced to be a shelter with no proper support from the relevant departments.

She said the staff were not trained for the survivors' social challenges.

Nt'sekhe said the DA conducted an oversight inspection at the centre on Friday, 13 October after several complaints from the community about the alleged selling of drugs at the centre.

"I witnessed the terrible state of the centre and smell of cannabis in a sleeping hall where children were playing. The DA will not watch such a beautiful facility decay due to the incompetence of the current government.

"It is over 40 days since Social Development has placed these survivors at the centre and that has forced the centre to cancel revenue generating activities such as wedding receptions and sports activities," said Nt'sekhe.

Nt'sekhe said her party demands that Gauteng Social Development MEC, Mbali Hlophe urgently migrate these individuals to a proper shelter.

"The DA will also be writing questions to ascertain if the department has written to the relevant embassies requesting them to help with their citizens, especially those who are undocumented as many South African survivors stated that the Minister of Social Development promised relief funds, however this has not happened," she said.
