SOME associate pole dancing with exotic dance.

But pole dancing instructor Kabelo Malahlela, also known as KBee, said it's a form of expression and a great way to stay fit.

KBee told the Daily Sun about her journey to becoming a pole dancing instructor.

The 28-year-old self-taught dancer from Joburg said she has been dancing most of her life.

"In every chapter of my life, I have danced or performed in some form. On my 22nd birthday, I learnt about pole dancing as one of the activities I chose for my birthday with my friends," she said.

KBee said at that time she could not do this as a hobby.

"I was a varsity student and did not have the funds, time or capacity. In the midst of the Covid pandemic, I decided to try the pole again since I was employed and had the income to do the hobby on my own. I immediately fell in love again, and it was further ignited by my love and passion for dance," KBee said.

After five months, she competed in APAC 2021 and took first place in the Amateur Pole Arts category.

"After that, I participated in NPAC 2022 and took first place in the Amateur Pole Art category. Later that year, I was approached by my great instructors, who are also the studio owners, about the possibility of training to become a pole instructor, and the rest is history," she said.

KBee said her main inspiration is the opportunity to tell stories through movement.

"Most importantly, I want to use the art of pole to show that anything is possible for anyone, regardless of race, body type, gender or background," KBee said.

She said anyone can do pole dancing.

"It's there for everyone. There really are no limits to who can try and explore this amazing art form," KBee said.

She said she also teaches people how to dance.

"I teach monthly twerk workshops and also choreograph hip-hop and Afro-beats routines. During the day, Monday through Friday, I am a corporate girlie," she said.
