She said cops have launched a manhunt for suspected killers.
This comes after seventeen people were shot and killed at Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.
"In one house, 13 people were killed, which includes twelve women and one man. In another homestead, four people were also killed. The eighteenth victim is in critical condition in hospital," said Mathe.
She said a total of 15 women and two men were killed.
Acting MEC for Social Development, Fundile Gade has condemned the killings.
"I am heartbroken by the tragic killing of 18 individuals, particularly the women, in Lusikisiki. This horrific act of violence is not only a profound loss for the families and friends of the victims but also a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the issues of gender-based violence and safety in our communities.
"We must unequivocally condemn this violence and recognise that the targeting of women is a serious societal issue that requires our immediate attention and action. The safety and dignity of women must be at the forefront of our efforts and we must work tirelessly to create an environment where they can live free from fear and harm," said Gade.
Gade said the department is ready to provide support to the affected families and to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
"We also urge community members to come forward with any information that may help in the investigation. Currently, social workers are providing counseling to families at mortuaries while identifying bodies. A team of social workers is also stationed in the village and gives psychosocial assistance to other community members.
"Let us honour the memories of those we have lost by committing to a united front against violence and by advocating for the rights and protection of women. Together, we can build a society that values and respects all individuals, ensuring safety and justice for everyone, especially our women," said Gade.
