KARMA catches up with thugs.

Five suspects, who robbed a supermarket in Gqeberha, collided with each other after they successfully stole items worth R80 000.

But this was no scene from a comedy movie as the suspects were not being chased when they collided with each other.

Witnesses said the suspects were driving in two vehicles which collided with each other on the De Stades Road in Colleen Glen.

"They fled the scene and were later caught by the police officers," said one witnesses who wanted to remain anonymous.

Eastern Cape police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the five suspects, aged between 17 and 28, were arrested following a business robbery at a supermarket in Greenbushes on Saturday, 21 March.

"It is alleged nine armed suspects entered the shop on Seaview Road and threatened the complainant (26) and his co-workers, ordering them to lie on the ground.

"The suspects ransacked the store and fled with various items, including cartons of cigarettes, vapes, sweets, cash, cellphones and watches with an estimated value of R80 000," she said.

Van Rensburg said the police responded swiftly when they were alerted to an accident on Old Seaview (De Stades) Road, Chelsea, possibly linked to the robbery.

"Upon arrival, members spotted six suspects fleeing the scene. After a brief foot chase and with the assistance of private security, five suspects were apprehended," said Van Rensburg.

She stated that the stolen items, including cigarettes, sweets and a large amount of cash, were recovered from the vehicles involved, a silver VW Polo and a white Ford Fiesta.

"Both vehicles were seized for further investigation. No firearms were recovered. The suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court this week. No injuries were reported during the incident," she said.

Van Rensburg said police investigations are ongoing and efforts to trace the remaining suspects continue.
