SOWETO residents constantly find themselves cleaning their houses thoroughly and drying their furniture whenever it rains heavily.
And each time it rains, Chardonnay Louw from Pimville zone 9, Soweto worries about what could happen to her home.
She told Daily Sun water always gets in the house when it rains and reaches knee level.
"The floods have left us traumatised. Every time we lose things, we must start again. It's sad because there is nowhere that the water can go. There's no drainage system," she said.

She said there's a train station behind her house, but the water still doesn't go there and instead floats to her house.
"It's very unpleasant. When the rain started on Saturday, 27 January, I was keeping watch because we do not have any storm drains down here at zone 9. The yard doesn't have drainages either," she said.

She said this is the first time the rain affected them this bad. "When the rain was about to finish, the water started coming into the house and flooded the entire house. There was a wall two houses away from me that collapsed. The water was below my knee," she said.
Chardonnay said the flooding damaged quite a few things in her home, including her children's chest of drawers, clothes got wet, the fridge stopped working and the stove has been tripping since it rained.
She said that the community helped each other clean the affected houses.

What upsets me about this situation is that that politicians always take advantage of our circumstances. They came here on Sunday dressed in their regalia going house to house taking pictures and asking what the problem is. Obviously, the problem is that we have no drains in zone 9. They were taking down notes and encouraging us to vote," she said.
Another resident said all her appliances are not working and they couldn't enter the house on the day of the flooding because the water in the house was shocking due to the electrical wires in the house.
