It is believed Mpho died from inhaling the exhaust fumes from the generator, which he may have switched on during load shedding.

THE family of a petrol attendant who died on duty wants answers.

It is suspected that Mpho Maiwashe died from carbon monoxide inhalation from a generator.

This happened while he was working during the night shift in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 10 May at a petrol station in Mpheni, Limpopo.

The 28-year-old's body was found in a storeroom at the petrol station by other employees.

It is believed Mpho died from inhaling the exhaust fumes from the generator, which he may have switched on during load shedding.

Emotions ran high as the family and community members gathered at the petrol station.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Mpho's uncle Khathu Nemagovhani expressed the family's concerns and hopes for justice.

"What worries us is that he seemed to have been at work alone. We hope that the law will play its role so that we can find justice," he said.

The owner of the petrol station confirmed his workers found Maiwashe in the storeroom, where the generator was still operating.

"That's all we know for now. He was alone because he was working the night shift," he said.

The owner also expressed that he was devastated to have lost one of his employees.

Raymond Matsapula, the secretary general of Mpheni South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) ward 15, blamed the incident on poor working conditions at the petrol station.

"Our main concern is how one person was given the responsibility of overseeing the entire garage throughout the night. With the current situation of load shedding, what is the level of safety?" he said.

Limpopo police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said cops in Waterval have opened an inquest docket.

"It's alleged that workers found the man dead inside the storeroom with the generator still on. The deceased was scrutinised thoroughly but no visible injuries observed. Autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death," he said.
