MATATIELE police in the Eastern Cape have launched an intensive manhunt.
This after a rape suspect escaped from custody while under police guard at Tayler Bequest Hospital on Wednesday, 10 December.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at about 4am on Wednesday.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said an officer assigned to guard the suspect identified as Siyabonga Sikhulumi briefly stepped away to use the restroom, leaving the suspect restrained to a hospital bed.
"When the officer returned, the bed was empty and Sikhulumi had vanished. Sikhulumi was arrested in connection with a rape case registered at Afsondering Police Station," he said.
Nkohli said the escape has prompted an urgent search, with additional resources deployed to track the suspect down.

"A case of escape from lawful custody has now been opened, and investigators are working to establish how he managed to free himself from the restraints and exit the hospital unnoticed," said Nkohli.
Police have urged the community to remain vigilant and not to approach the suspect, as he is considered dangerous.
"Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have information regarding his whereabouts to come forward immediately. Information can be reported directly to Captain Zubenathi Wopula on 067 598 2187," he said.
Nkohli emphasised that all information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
