The 60-year-old man repeatedly raped his 16-year-old biological daughter since she was in grade 4.

In some instances, the accused would threaten not to give the daughter money for lunch if she refused to have sex with him.

The victim reported the matter to her mum, who allegedly didn't believe her. She then told her brother, who reported the matter to Katlehong North cops in August 2024.

The case was then assigned to Sergeant Celumusa Thango of Katlehong, who immediately took over the investigation as the suspect was already arrested by community leaders.

Thango from Family Violence, Child Protection Services and Sexual Offences Unit successfully testified in court, and the accused's bail application was denied.

An intense and speedy investigation led to the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court finalising the case within seven months. The accused was sentenced on 18 June to life imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.

On Tuesday, 1 July, Ekurhuleni deputy district commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela applauded Detective Sergeant Thango for the role he played in securing life imprisonment for the accused.

"The sentencing of the accused demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the SAPS and judiciary to protect women and children and bring perpetrators to justice.

"This life sentence sends a powerful message that crimes against women and children will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

"We applaud the bravery of the victim who reported the matter to his brother and Thango, who worked tirelessly to make sure that the perpetrator was sentenced to prison," said Machakela.
