IN a stunning display of Ubuntu spirit, Mzansi people raise more than R130 000 for Hawks Warrant Officer Karl Sanders.

This is all because of a stolen coffee machine that symbolised far more than just a morning caffeine fix.

The extraordinary outpour of support came after Sanders revealed at the Madlanga Commission that his personal coffee machine, which he described as his "only safe space during long shifts," was stolen from his office during a Hawks raid.

Adding insult to injury, he was then treated as a suspect.

@CrimeWatch_RSA, a prominent digital watchdog account dedicated to justice and crime prevention, launched a BackaBuddy campaign with a modest goal of R5 000 to replace the machine. "Let's get W/O Sander a new coffee machine," was the simple plea.

But Mzansi had other ideas. By Wednesday, 3 June, donations had exploded to R139 980 nearly 28 times the original target, with contributions flooding in from more than 115 donors across the country.

The generosity followed Sanders' emotional vindication at the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday, 2 June, where he was fully exonerated after the commission heard that a polygraph test used against him was faulty and null and void.

The veteran investigator, who has served South Africa for more than 40 years in major drug investigations, was implicated in allegations linked to the 2021 theft of 541kg of cocaine worth about R200 million from a Port Shepstone Hawks exhibit room.

Sanders broke down when he heard for the first time that the lie detector test had found nothing against him.

His evidence detailed the intimidation and toxic internal environment within elite police units that made his working life unbearable. The stolen coffee machine became a poignant symbol of how far the persecution had gone.

Campaign organiser, Kyle van Reenen announced that surplus funds will support narcotics K9 training via BackaBuddy, ensuring Sanders' ordeal contributes to fighting the very drug syndicates he dedicated his career to dismantling.

The overwhelming response proves that when South Africans see injustice corrected, they don't just celebrate, they show up with their wallets open.
