Rustenburg Municipality strike concludes with agreement on worker Categorisation.

AFTER a three-week strike, the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) and the Rustenburg Local Municipality have come to an agreement, concluding the industrial action that began on 6 May.

The strike was initiated by workers demanding the implementation of the Grade 7 categorisation for the municipality, which was previously classified as Grade 5 in terms of salary scales.

For years, workers have advocated for the Rustenburg Local Municipality to be reclassified to reflect its size and operations comparably with other similar-sized municipalities.

Joseph Magalefa, Samwu chairman in Rustenburg, announced that an agreement was reached to upgrade the municipality to Grade 6 from 1 July 2024.

This reclassification will lead to adjustments in resource allocation, employee benefits, and overall municipal operations.

"Additionally, a working task team has been established to oversee the implementation of Grade 7," Magalefa said.

Magalefa praised the union members for their perseverance and dedication to securing their rights.

"This strike highlights the vital role of trade unions and the effectiveness of collective action in achieving workers' objectives. It also serves as a reminder of the significance of unions in championing workers' rights and enhancing working conditions."

Lebogang Modise, a worker at the municipality, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the protest, particularly the anticipation of resolving back-pay issues and ensuring all employees receive their dues. Modise is optimistic that the Task Team will expedite the implementation of Grade 7.

Solly Bele, manager in the executive mayor's office, confirmed the strike's conclusion, noting that the resolution was reached during a council meeting on Wednesday, 22 May.

"Both parties have agreed on the implementation of Grade 6," Bele said, adding that a task team has been formed to work towards achieving Grade 7 categorisation.
