WHILE Pikitup casual workers continue with their strike, rubbish is piling up in the streets of Joburg and surrounding areas.

The strike is currently on day eight with the casual workers demanding permanent employment after the company recently hired more than 300 permanent workers and allegedly overlooked them.

Meanwhile, South African Municipal Workers Union's (Samwu) Thobani Nkosi accused ActionSA of influencing the illegal strike.

"This illegal strike has been further influenced by ActionSA in the City of Joburg, which has irresponsibly and frivolously called for the nullification of the employment of 300 Pikitup employees and accommodate this disgruntled group," said Nkosi.

Nkosi called on residents to exercise caution and vote against parties such as ActionSA, which have consistently encouraged action that regresses progress in the city.

He said ActionSA's conduct is not new as they have shown similar regressive, destructive behaviour and is another example of the party's willingness to sacrifice the well-being of the city.

Nkosi said Samwu is calling on the protesting group to stop any action that might hinder other Pikitup employees from performing their duties to keep the city clean.

On the other hand, ActionSA Joburg caucus leader Nobuhle Mthembu is expected to submit a comprehensive document detailing allegations of unfair labour practices at Pikitup.

"As ActionSA Joburg, we want Pikitup to nullify the employment of these cadres and start a new transparent process that will also allow those who are working for the entity to apply," said Mthembu.

City of Joburg city manager, Floyd Brink is expected to lead a briefing on Wednesday, 22 May to outline Pikitup's recovery plans following the disruptions caused by the strike.
