Multiple shops were destroyed in a fire that broke out in Polokwane CBD on Monday afternoon.

SEVERAL shops went up in flames in Polokwane CBD after one shop caught fire.

The incident occurred on Monday, 22 September at the corner of Paul Kruger and Rissik Street in Polokwane CBD, Limpopo.

According to an anonymous employee at one of the affected shops, the fire was reportedly caused by an iron from a neighbouring shop and spread around 14:00.

Fire fighters, police and traffic officials were on the scene.

No injuries were reported, but several shop owners lost their livelihoods in the incident.

Some residents said one of the shops which was also affected by the blaze was opened a few days ago.

"I think there's something wrong because that restaurant is still new, it was opened a few days ago," said Kgaipi Happy.

Polokwane Local Municipality confirmed that no injuries and fatalities were reported.

Municipal spokesman Thipa Selala said the municipal emergency officials responded to the incident swiftly.

"We are deeply relieved that no injuries or casualties were reported. While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, our thoughts are with those affected, whose livelihoods have been shaken by this tragedy," said Selala.
