THE niece of the late anti-apartheid struggle hero, Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu, has officially joined the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party.

Mam'Portia Mahlangu's move to former president Jacob Zuma's party was announced by MK on Tuesday, 8 April, during a ceremony marking the anniversary of Mahlangu's death.

According to MK party spokesman Nhlamulo Ndhlela, Mam'Portia joins the party with the full blessing and support of her father, Chief Lucas Mahlangu.

"We are honoured to welcome Mam'Portia as a member of the MK party. Her decision carries immense historical and emotional significance," said Ndhlela.

Mahlangu, who was executed by the apartheid regime on 6 April 1979 at the age of 23, was a key member of both the African National Congress (ANC) and its armed wing, uMkhonto Wesizwe.

He's remembered for his courage, defiance, and ultimate sacrifice in the fight for South Africa's freedom.

Ndhlela highlighted the bond between Mahlangu and Zuma, noting that their shared history and struggle connect past and present generations.

"The late Mahlangu shared a cherished brotherhood with former president Zuma and is remembered for his unbroken spirit and bravery in the face of apartheid oppression," he said.

Reflecting on Mam'Portia's decision to join the party, Ndhlela added that her membership, nearly 46 years after her uncle's brutal murder, serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for true liberation.

"As Solomon Mahlangu said before his execution, 'My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom.' It is now our duty to continue that struggle," he said.

He urged South Africans to follow Mam'Portia's example by picking up the spear and advancing the cause of the marginalised through continued activism.
