Three suspects arrested in Joburg after viral video shows toddler allegedly smoking drugs while adults' cheer.

THREE suspects involved in a shocking video that went viral on Tuesday, 29 July have been arrested.

The video shows a young boy allegedly lighting drugs in a bottle neck pipe for his mum, who then encourages him to smoke while other adults look on and cheer him.

In the 23-second video, the toddler is seen lighting the pipe, while the person recording asks, "Are you going to pull?"

The kid then smokes the pipe to the applause and encouragement of the adults around him.

The arrest was announced by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on Wednesday, 30 July.

JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed the swift action taken by authorities following a tip-off from a concerned resident.

"On Tuesday, 29 July, JMPD K9 Unit officers, while on routine patrol, received a crucial tip-off identifying the suspects and their whereabouts. Officers immediately responded to the given address in Newclare," said Fihla.

When officers arrived, they found the kid's mum, who matched the description seen in the viral video. During questioning, she identified two other people who were also involved - including the person who had filmed the incident.

"Officers approached the identified suspects, introduced themselves, and questioned them about the footage. All three suspects confessed to using 'mandrax' and admitted to filming the incident," Fihla said.

The suspects were arrested immediately on charges of child abuse and neglect, and their cellphones were taken as evidence. They're currently being held at Sophiatown cop shop.

The Joburg SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit confirmed that they followed up on the matter and the kid involved has been removed and will be placed in a designated place of safety.

"The JMPD commends the vigilance of the community member who provided the tip-off, enabling a rapid response and ensuring the child's safety," said JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca.

"This successful operation shows the JMPD's unwavering commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society and holding accountable those who endanger them," said the unit.
