Residents in Browns Farm said Soyama was sitting in his vehicle in Dlephu Street when two gunmen approached and opened fire.

"He was sitting inside his car when gunmen fired shots and killed him at the scene, and vanished. There were two, and they ran on foot. Maybe they had a getaway car parked somewhere," said a resident who lives close to the scene.

Cata's current spokesman Nkululeko Sityebi confirmed the incident and expressed shock at the murder, adding that Soyama had previously served as Cata's spokesman.

Police spokesman Joseph Swartbooi stated that detectives are working diligently to track the perpetrators.

"Detectives are hard at work gathering information at the crime scene in Dlephu Street, Browns Farm, for clues to where a 61-year-old man was shot and killed earlier today, Tuesday, 16 September 2025.

"Information at our disposal suggests unknown gunmen opened fire at the deceased and fled the scene. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel," said Swaartbooi.

"Motive for this attack is believed to be taxi-related. Nyanga police registered a murder for further investigation."
