FORMER Kaizer Chiefs defender David Kannemeyer says it is time for Amakhosi star Khama Billiat to prove people wrong and regain his best form.

The 32-year-old is one of the high earners at Chiefs and has failed to live up to expectations since joining the Soweto giants from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018.

The former Zimbabwean international joined Chiefs after an outstanding stint with the Tshwane giants where he won two Premiership titles, Nedbank Cup, Telkom Knockout, Caf Champions League, as well as Caf Super Cup.

And in 2016 while playing for the Brazilians, Billiat was named PSL Player of the Season and PSL Player’s Player of the Season after displaying brilliant form, which also attracted interest from overseas teams for his signature.

But two years later and still enjoying a good run of form, Billiat opted to sign for Chiefs, with a lot expected from him. But the Harare-born forward has not produced the goods for the past four years.

But Kannemeyer, who played for both Chiefs and Downs, believes Billiat is not a bad player and it’s unfair for people to criticise him.

“Billiat is still one of the best players in the PSL,” said Kannemeyer, who played for Chiefs for three season and won one Premiership title with the team.

“I don’t understand why people think Billiat can be a bad player overnight. I think he is still a good player but he needs to prove it this season when the league resumes after the World Cup.”

He added:” I think the problem is that Billiat does not have good players around him who understand him.

“He (Billiat) was a good player at Ajax Cape Town and Sundowns. I think this break will do him good and Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane must try to see how they can get the best out of him as they still need him.”

This season Billiat has played nine league matches without scoring. Some football fans have been calling for Zwane to drop him and give other players a chance.

Billiat’s contract with Chiefs is set to expire at the end of this season, and many believe it’s time for the four-times PSL champions to end their marriage with the former Ajax star.
