Phunya Sele Sele have had a difficult start to the season, and sit 11th on the log with just six points from six matches, while they were also humbled in both the MTN8 (3-0 to Bidvest Wits) and Telkom Knockout (4-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns).

It was after yesterday’s drubbing by the Brazilians that the alarm bells really started ringing, with reports that recently-resigned Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi had been earmarked to take over.

Celtic are mum on a potential successor, but have confirmed that assistant coach Boebie Solomons will take over in a caretaker capacity.

“It is with regret that Bloemfontein Celtic FC announces that Clinton Larsen has resigned with immediate effect,” a statement on the club’s website reads.

“Larsen contacted senior management this morning and the club was left with no choice but to accept his resignation.

“The club would like to thank Clinton for his achievements over the past three years as head coach.”

Larsen has also put out a statement, which reads: “Firstly I would like to thank the club for affording me the opportunity to coach one of the biggest clubs in the country.

“I was really humbled and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. I would like to thank management, staff, players and especially Jimmy Augousti for showing faith in me.

“The time is right for me to leave and I wish the club everything of the best.

“I feel personally it is the right time to give someone else an opportunity to help the club grow.”
