COSAFA Cup match report South Africa v Malawi 07 June 2019

Bafana Bafana secured the COSAFA Cup Plate title after beating Malawi 5-4 on penalties following a goalless 120 minutes.
Bafana’s six changes saw Reeve Frosler, Athenkosi Dladla, Grant Margeman, Tercious Malepe, Liam Jordan and Kamohelo Mahlatsi drafted back in to the side.
Malawi remained unchanged from the Comoros clash, and launched the first scare with a 13th minute free-kick from Gerald Phiri Junior but Mondli Mpoto parried away.
Bafana made an injury enforced change after 35 minutes when Katlego Mohamme filled in for Keanu Cupido who struggled to continue following a rash challenge.
The home side’s confidence grew on 38 minutes and cracked the woodwork through Mahlatsi’s header off a corner.
Bafana closed-in again 40 minutes in through a near-post header from Margeman following a corner, but Brighton Munthali pulled clear.
Into added time, Mpoto denied Gabadinho Mhango with a last-ditch save from point-blank range while Phiri Junior struck the crossbar from a direct corner.
The Flames maintained their fire at the start of the second half, pinning Bafana in their own half.
Malawi introduced their first change on 60 minutes, as Chikoti Chirwa came on for Phiri Junior, as Bafana turned the pot.
Bafana missed a golden chance on 71 minutes when Mahlatsi fluffed a rebound from a free-kick, whilst Jordan rattled the outside post six minutes later from the near post.
Approaching full-time, neither side managed to find the breakthrough as the contest went to 30 minutes of extra time. However, neither side were able to break the deadlock thereafter.
After two misses apiece, the shoot-out went to sudden death where Charles Petro struck the underside of the crossbar to see Bafana over the line after Teboho Mokoena’s successful conversion.
