Eric Tinkler banking on Maritzburg United's home Friday night record in Telkom Knockout

The Team of Choice have been pitted against Gavin Hunt's in-form team for a Friday night clash (20h00) in the first round of the Telkom Knockout competition.

Maritzburg are high on confidence as they are coming from back-to-back wins at home in the Absa Premiership, and Tinkler has vowed to keep their Friday night home record looking good.

"I think first and foremost the most important thing is that we come from good home victories, good home wins and obviously we have started to create a very good record especially here at home on Friday nights, because we've gone 14 games here at home on a Friday night that we haven't lost," Tinkler said.

"We would like to keep that momentum going, we would like to build on the two wins that we've got in the league to keep growing the confidence and belief in the squad. So winning the opener on Friday can only boost the morale and that confidence."

Tinker understands the threat Hunt's men can pose to any club, especially as they are doing well in the Absa Premiership, where they can go top of the log if they win their games in hand.

"You know Bidvest Wits is a good team, strong team and obviously one of the contenders for the league title. They had a very good start to the season so it's not going to be easy, a very tough match.

"But if you want to win trophies you must be able to compete and beat the better teams and it's a good opportunity for us to do that, especially playing at home."

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder tasted success in this tournament with Cape Town City in the 2016/17 season and says his players are looking to make history by becoming the first ever squad to deliver the cup for Maritzburg.

"We want to go as far as we can. We want to create a winning mentality, and obviously one would like to create a little bit of history. You know this club has never ever won a cup competition. Now we have an opportunity to try and change that."
