Today marks the 75th anniversary since the birth of Chiefs’ legendary chairman, who established the club back in 1969 as Kaizer XI, before the birth of Kaizer Chiefs a year later in 1970.
With the founding member still in charge of the club, it has increased significance for the team, who have already made a strong start to the 2019/20 season as they currently occupy top spot on the Absa Premiership table.
But, as birthdays go, many would consider a victory in Amakhosi’s next fixture against The Citizens a fitting gift to ‘Chincha Guluva’, though Middendorp begs to differ.
The German, in fact, reflected on their resurgence over the past three months after a disastrous end to last season, and believes continued improvement is what Motaung would be concerned about, while today is merely about kicking back and enjoying his celebration.
“I think actually, as the chairman, getting his 75th birthday today and knowing where you have been three months before this day, it’s not about a wish on this honourable day but something where everybody has brought this club back to a certain level,” said Middendorp.
“I think having seen this, what he is wishing in particular for is to go further and make more progress, and that is the biggest attention you can send as a team, technical team and as a club to somebody that has done a fantastic job to bring this brand to this level over the past 50 years.
“The birthday, and I’m sure I see it right, is just something to sit down and take a bit more time for yourself, having a nice coffee in the morning, and I hope he will have good use of this day somewhere in South Africa or probably in the world.”
