Gift Links not taking COSAFA Cup chance for granted

Cape Town City attacking midfielder Gift Links is grateful to get an opportunity to be part of the under-23 side at the COSAFA Cup.

Links got called up after Phakamani Mahlambi was released from the team due to personal reasons and the City youngster says he does not feel any pressure being in the national team.

"I didn't feel any pressure for getting a late call-up, I was excited because I know the opportunity to be in the national team means a lot to millions of South Africans," he said.

"It's not easy to be noticed knowing that many young players want to be in this setup. I'm so grateful for the opportunity."

Links believes the under-23 players have benefited from these two weeks and as players they should take the COSAFA Cup seriously because many footballers get noticed at the tournament, making an example of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Dax from Madagascar.

"It's good, it helped us to connect and understand each other," he added. "COSAFA is one of the tournaments that opens doors for many players. If you remember after last year's edition Dax from Madagascar got a contract with Chiefs. Most of the players from Zambia and other countries also get exposed."

"We must not take this platform for granted, it helps a lot of players and we must use it to showcase our talent."
