Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns showed their fighting spirit in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over AmaZulu on Monday. Gordon Igesund's team will need to display such character on a regular basis for the rest of the season if they are to claim a third consecutive title.

On Tuesday, Golden Arrows showed their potential with a fine 2-0 win over struggling Platinum Stars in Rustenburg. The three points saw Abafana Bes'thende move into the top six, while Platinum Stars remain firmly entrenched in the bottom quarter.

Six fixtures on Wednesday completed the midweek action, with leaders Ajax Cape Town claiming an impressive 3-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at Athlone that further underlines their growing status in South African football.

But BidVest Wits are still breathing down the Cape side's necks, trailing only on goal difference after a 2-0 win over Jomo Cosmos in Johannesburg. Defender Ashraf Hendricks netted a brace to condemn basement club Cosmos to their seventh defeat of the season.

Free State Stars and SuperSport United both collected handsome home wins over Santos and Black Leopards respectively, but the same could not be said of Kaizer Chiefs, who crashed to a 1-0 defeat against Thanda Royal Zulu at Olympia Park. Ironically, the Thanda goal scorer was none other than Serge Djiehoua, who is on loan from the Amakhosi.

But the most eye catching performance of the round was surely Orlando Pirates' 3-0 whipping of Moroka Swallows at Olen Park. Zimbabwean striker Gilbert Mushangazike scored on debut, while the Nations Cup duo of Teko Modise and Excellent Walaza also put their names on the score sheet to hand the Buccaneers their first league win over the Birds since the first half of the 2005/06 season.
