Analysts tip Czech Republic

UBS make predictions before major international tournaments, and two years ago they correctly forecasted that Italy would emerge victorious at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The parameters they use to decide where the teams will end up include Fifa ranking, the history of direct clashes, and the results in recent international championships.

UBS predicted that the Czech Republic would beat Switzerland in one semifinal, with Italy defeating Holland in the other.

In the final itself, the Czechs went on to lift the trophy, after overcoming Roberto Donadoni’s Azzurri.

“Something like this has already happened in 1976, when Czechoslovakia beat Germany, who were the World Champions and the favourites,” analyst Andreas Hoefert said.

“Wouldn't it be a further nice chapter in the long history of football if the Czechs again beat a world champion in the European championship?”
