Appiah gets time to recover

There are fears the player could miss the African showpiece event after what he calls complications to a knee injury that forced him to consult specialists in Italy.

But the Ghana Football Association says they have made no contingency plans for the player and will allow him as much time as possible to recover for the tournament.

“We are not thinking about going in to the Nations Cup with Stephen absent. We don’t want to put a timeline to a decision regarding Appiah’s fitness. He doesn’t deserve that kind of additional psychological stress. The deadline we have is the Caf deadline, where we have to send the names of our players by January 10,” the association said in a statement.

“Effectively, we are prepared to wait as long as we can to make sure our captain gets properly cleared as a player who is fit to take part in the Nations Cup.”

Appiah has been without a doubt Ghana’s key man with his passing, passion and leadership skills a key factor in the Black Stars’ rise in stature over the past two years.

The player said last week he was prepared to do everything possible to play a part in the Nations Cup.

“I want my fellow countrymen and women to know I will do all it takes to be available for Ghana when the African Cup of Nations starts,” he said.

“I really want to help my country win the trophy on February 10.”
