The Cape team produced a brilliant performance to completely outplay Phunya Sele Sele, and on the evidence of Saturday’s game alone, showed that they are good enough to compete in the PSL.
However, it may have been the lure of the big prize money payout for reaching the next round, or the fact that the game was shown live on TV, that inspired Ikapa to produce such an inspired performance.
It has been a different story for the club in the Coastal Stream of the First Division, where they find themselves third from bottom on the league table.
“It was a great game on Saturday and a fantastic performance by all the guys,” former Bafana Bafana striker August told KickOff.com.
“It’s just a pity we have not been playing like that in the league; if we had, I am sure we would be 10 points clear at the top of the log.
“We have not showed consistency in the league and have lost our concentration at crucial times,” added the former Hellenic, Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town marksman.
Ikapa had an inspirational performance from their young skipper, Kurt Lentjies, to thank for the win.
It was Lentjies’ cracking strike that saw Celtic keeper Shuaib Walters spill the ball to allow August to bundle the ball into the net for Ikapa’s second goal in their 3-2 win.
Five minutes from time Under-23 international Lentjies capped a fine all-round display which saw him exerting his influence all over the park when he reacted fastest to squeeze the ball past Walters at the near post for the winner.
“Kurt has been our best player this season and had another fantastic game on Saturday. I think we will probably soon lose him to a PSL club and I believe if he carries on with the way he is playing, he could feature in the 2010 World Cup,” August says of his team-mate.
