Gift Motupa hoping to force his way into Bafana Bafana Africa Cup of Nations squad

A number of players will be working their socks off in the final few weeks of the season to convince Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter to select them for the 24-team competition, set to be played in Egypt in June.

Motupa, who has had the opportunity to play for Bafana in the past, has been in good form for the Clever Boys this season, scoring nine goals in 18 appearances. He is just three goals behind the Absa Premiership’s top scorer Mwape Musonda. If he continues to score, Motupa could break into the team and add to the options in attack with the likes of Percy Tau and Lebogang Mothiba.

“Yes it will be good for any player in South Africa to represent the country. What I need to do is make sure that I do my job at club level, so that I can have an opportunity to be called up to the national team,” Motupa said earlier this week, just a few days after Bafana qualified for AFCON.

“It will be good for us as players to compete for places. It will be good for our clubs and for the country. We want to see our clubs and the national team doing well.”
