Bafana's ranking takes a tumble

The country has dropped down to 85th place after the home defeats last month at the hands of Nigeria in Port Elizabeth and Guinea at Atteridgeville’s Super Stadium.

Not even a 3-0 bounce-back win over Malawi last week in Germiston has helped stop the steep fall.

South Africa have now fallen 36 places since the start of the year.

The 15-place drop is the second worst in a single month for the country.

But, if it is any consolation, Bafana are still some way off their worst ever place of 124 in December 1992.

South Africa are now ranked 20th in the African standings behind the likes of Burkina Faso, Kenya and Gabon.

Spain lead world champions Italy and Germany at the head of the world standings.

Both Spain and Italy are heading to South Africa next year for the Confederation Cup.
