Banyana crash in Ghana

The match started well enough for August Makalakalane’s side as they took the lead inside 13 minutes.

Portia Modise picked out striker Veronica Phewa in the box and she rounded the home keeper before coolly slotting home.

But the lead was short-lived as two minutes later Safiatu Abdul Rahumu levelled for the home side. Chances were few and far between for the remainder of the match, but disaster struck for the South Africans in injury time at the end of the game.

Florence Okoe struck a magnificent volley from the edge of the area that rifled into the roof of the net, giving the home side all three points and the lead at the top of the qualification group.

It has been a terrible campaign for Banyana, who lost 5-0 in their opening match to Nigeria, and 1-0 at home to Ghana in August, leaving them pointless after three matches.
