Basetsana edge closer to World Cup spot

Carrying a 4-0 lead from the first leg played at Caledonian Stadium a fortnight ago, Basetsana completed a 7-1 aggregate routing of their neighbours after a 3-1 victory in Maputo.

Ironically Basetsana’s winning margin is identical to Bafana’s losing margin.

Goals by Nothando Vilakazi in the first half and then Tina Selepe and Mamello Makhabane in the last half paved the way for a date with Mauritius in the next round.

Coach Anna Monate chose to go with an all attacking system that proved to be the tonic in dismantling the hosts.

If Basetsana overcome Mauritius in another two legged tie they will most probably meet DR Congo in the last qualifier to determine who goes to the World Cup.

“The team is playing as a unit and everybody can score. The dependence on one player has been eliminated in this team which is also moulding very well. I have all the belief in that we will be able to qualify for the World Cup,” says Fran Hilton Smith, the team manager.

Two places for countries from CAF have been allocated at the Under-20 finals which will have 16 finalists from around the globe battling it out for supremacy.
