Basetsana meet DR Congo in World Cup qualifier

South Africa will host DRC at the Caledonian Stadium in Tshwane on Saturday 31 May 2008 at 3pm. The return leg will be played on the 15 June 2008 in the DRC.

“This will be a do-or-die game for us,” says Augustine Makalakalane, the Banyana Banyana Coach - who plays an advisory role to Basetsana’s Head Coach, Anna Monate.

“We must fight all the way. We expect this one to be a tough game. Playing at home is our first challenge because we have the pressure to score as many goals in our backyard, because history has taught us that when we play away the odds are usually higher,” says Makalakalane.

Team Manager, Fran Hilton-Smith, is appealing for loyal fans to come out in big numbers at the stadium to support the girls in this vital match, saying a runaway victory will put South Africa one foot in the World Cup in Chile.

“The girls fully understand that they have to finish the job here at home. Our previous trip to DR Congo was not a pleasant experience. We beat our opponents 2-1 here at home, but went on to lose 1-0 in a very controversial fashion where our players were either sent off or intimidated by cards being flashed at them. And because of the away goal rule, DRC went on to represent Africa in the 2006 World Cup,” recalls Hilton-Smith.
