The Under 20’s are contesting the tournament in place of the senior side, Banyana Banyana, in order to give the junior side an opportunity to prepare for their two-legged final qualifier for the Under 20 Women’s Fifa World Cup.
Basetsana are scheduled to play the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Caledonian Stadium in Tshwane on May 31.
“I’m confident that we will not let the country down even though we are replacing Banyana Banyana,” says team coach, Anna Monate.
“With seven of our players already regulars in Banyana Banyana, I think we will have a good run in the Cosafa tournament. We are humbled by the gesture of giving the Under-20’s the honour of playing on behalf of Banyana. This is a serious competition one which South Africa has won consecutively since its inception in Zimbabwe in 2002.
“We are taking with us Banyana Banyana’s top striker, Noko Matlou, to bolster our scoring department, because this will be a tough eight-nations tournament where South Africa will be the team to watch and the target for challengers to the crown,” says Monate.
