Currently leading Maritzburg United by a single point and with three league matches to play, the Nelson Mandela Municipality outfit has arranged to play two friendly matches in Gauteng this weekend.
The national first division log leaders will play premier league outfit Wits and the University of Pretoria to prepare the players for their crucial matches ahead.
The winners of the Coast Stream and the Inland Stream – currently FC AK – meet each other in a final that determines who gets promoted to the Premiership next season.
The loser of this match, together with the runners-up of the two steams meet the second last team from the Premiership in play-offs to determine the second team to be promoted. Bay United need just one point from their last three games to qualify for this event.
United play Ikapa Sporting at the Westbourne Oval next Saturday in their final home match of the season.
They then end off with away games against Maritzburg United and Nathi Lions, who are second and third respectively on the log.
“The trip to Johannesburg will serve two purposes,” coach Vladislav Heric told PE’s Herald newspaper yesterday.
“The boys will be able to bond before the vital run-in and at the same time they need to keep in shape. A fortnight’s break could take the edge off them.”
The Herald also reports that the injury to United’s striker Linos Chalwe is not serious.
The Zambian international, who represented his country in the 2006 African Nations Cup, was forced to leave the field with a head injury in last week‘s match against Western Province United. Doctors confirmed yesterday that the injury was not serious.
Although he is still feeling the effects of the injury, Chalwe will travel with the squad tonight.
