Bafana manager Sipho Nkumane confirmed that all the players selected for the squad to face Nigeria in the 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Abuja this weekend have reported for duty – except McCarthy.
Nkumane was unable to say specifically what those personal reasons were, and added that coach Joel Santana would wait until Monday evening before making a decision on whether to drop McCarthy or not.
“Benni has relayed a message saying he had some personal problems to sort out and we expect him to arrive later today. However, the coach has already indicated that he wants to have word with McCarthy before making any statement ahead of the game against Nigeria.”
Sapa quotes Santana as saying: "McCarthy is an important player. Please give me a little more time to sort this problem out. I have only just been told of it and I will have a solution on McCarthy by Tuesday."
Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena is not concerned whether his Rovers teammate pitches or not.
"It is always, Benni, Benni, Benni,” he said. “I do not know his reasons for not showing but I have confidence in our players to beat Nigeria with or without Benni.
"Sure we would miss his experience especially in such a big game, but we have quality and are starting to build up the squad. I know it is going to be difficult, Nigeria are a big side with big players but we are not going to be scared of them, we are going to Nigeria to get a result.
“We can upset Nigeria in their own backyard. I have that strong belief in the team."
Nkumane added that Santana has drafted Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lerato Chabanga into the squad after he was omitted from the initial squad that was announced last Wednesday.
Bafana Bafana will fly out on Friday for their clash against the Super Eagles.
