“I met with the players this morning to assure them that this move has absolutely nothing to do with recent results, but has been on the cards for some time. I was sent to the 2004 World Cup and the ACN in Ghana as an observer for 2010, so the process has been underway for a while now.
“I also assured the players and technical staff that the transition will go smoothly, and that they will not be affected at all.”
Blanckensee joined Wits as a player in the Under-19 section in 1975, then went on to coach numerous teams in the junior and amateur sections for 25 years.
He served as general manager of the professionals when the club was known as Wits University FC, then became CEO when BidVest acquired majority ownership.
“Obviously the World Cup assignment will be over after 2010, so hopefully, I will be able to re-join the club that has defined my life for 35 years,” added Blanckensee.
