Boring AmaGlug-glug draw

The former Bafana skipper has been continually linked with coaching jobs at First Division side Western Province United and Mamelodi Sundowns where he was reported to be headed to take a head of development job.

“I am still here with the national Under-23 team and so that tells of where I stand. I choose not to say much with regards to responding with what people say and write,” said Komphela after a drab goalless draw with Denmark at Eldorado Park yesterday afternoon.

The persistent rumours seem to be strengthened by a mystery surrounding his contractual affairs with Safa.

Komphela arrived back in the country from Ghana at the weekend where he was reportedly doing some ‘shadow work’ for Bafana Bafana.

Meanwhile, despite no longer having any chance of qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Komphela insists he and the team will be travelling to Nigeria for the dead rubber qualifier in a positive frame of mind.

“Even though we no longer have any chance of qualifying, there is no reason why we should not give this game our best. We will select the best players available at the time with the sole mission of wanting to win the game.

“We have to try and finish the group with some respectability because so far we have one point and we do not want to finish that way,” said Komphela.

Komphela’s prediction of a ‘positive attitude’ must still reveal itself because yesterday’s match was one big yawn and many of the fans must have left the stadium wondering why they even bothered to attend.

There was little sign that AmaGlug-glug were using the match as preparation for the qualifier against Nigeria.

Both sides chose to pack the midfield and play with a lone striker upfront while also going about at a leisurely pace.

The only sparkle in the first half was when Mokoena pierced through the spine of the Danes’ defence only to shoot tamely at their keeper Heinze in a one-on-one situation. The second half was even more boring with the only thrill provided coming when second assistant referee Gomes was injured after being blasted by a powerful clearance from Mdledle.

Even the many changes Komphela made in the second half brought no change with Nkambule merely choosing to play to the gallery.
