Not that there was ever much doubt as the Brazilian bid was the only one received by Fifa as they stretched their rotation policy, for the last time, to South America in 2014.

The Samba nation famously last hosted the event in 1950, when more than 200 000 people saw them lose the Final 2-1 to Uruguay at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

And the award has received all-round praise, not least from Uefa president Michel Platini:

"Brazil is the country that has given most to football, it's the biggest football nation in the world which has won the most World Cups. A World Cup in Brazil is like going on a pilgrimage to Mecca... or Jerusalem."
