Bucs needs goals as well as points

The Buccaneers made valuable ground on leaders Ajax Cape Town when a slice of luck saw them defeat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 at Seisa Ramabodu on Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the Urban Warriors had fallen 3-2 to Supersport United.

Lebohang Mokoena’s right flank cross was misjudged by Celtic goalkeeper Posnett Omony, who allowed the ball to drop over this goal line and hand the Buccaneers all three points.

Owen Da Gama’s side is now just five points off Ajax’s pace with 34 points, after 21 matches and on Saturday they will be going for Leopards’ throat because, apart from the points, Bucs also trail the Urban Warriors in terms of goal difference.

Bucs also currently have only a two goal advantage of Supersport United and so they will have to rectify this aspect of their title challenge in the event of level pegging on points.

Lidoda Duvha, who recently suspended coach Boebie Solomons, are almost marooned at the bottom of the table, with 15th placed Jomo Cosmos three points ahead.

They have lost six consecutive matches and won only once (2-1 against Mamelodi Sundowns on December 5, 2007) in their last 13 Absa Premiership outings.

On Wednesday afternoon they suffered a 3-1 reverse at the hands of Moroka Swallows, their sixth home loss of the season. However, their away form is even worse: nine defeats in 11 games and only one victory, the worst record in the top flight for the 2007/08 campaign.

Pirates also have an overwhelmingly favourable record in head-to-head stats, winning 11 of their 13 league games since Leopards were promoted for 2001/02 and losing just once, back in the second half of the 2002/03 season.
