"Today, they showed me what I see every single day in training," McCarthy said post-match.
"I saw heart, I saw character, I saw personality, I saw arrogance and I saw a football team and group of players that are not afraid of anything.
"For my team to have gone through that [Covid-19 testing disputes] and then batter Mazembe because we've also never played on an astroturf before.
"So that was also another new thing for us to face and to out in the performance we did, wow, these guys are the real heroes of AmaZulu.
"They go into the history books of the club for what they've done today on the football pitch. Against a team who are five-time CAF Champions League champions.
"They're seasoned campaigners and our opponents were one of the most experienced teams and one of the toughest in the competition."
McCarthy also highlighted the team spirit within his team which he attributed to their historic achievement.
"The highlight of the day was that team spirit," McCarthy added.
"These boys went out there and played for the team, so I'm delighted and we showed some unbelievable quality today.
"Myself and all the coaches we are absolutely delighted to be in charge of this group of players.
"We are history makers, the first [AmaZulu] team to finish second in the DStv Premiership, and now the first team to qualify for the CAF Champions League group stages.
"I hope people will remember us for as long as there is an AmaZulu because we were the first to do it."
