Mamelodi Sundowns' Asavela Mbekile ready for CAF Champions League clash with Zamalek

On Sunday evening he will continue at right-back against Zamalek like he has done in the last two CAF Champions League games tasked with monitoring the threat of the Egyptians on the flanks - the same way he did against ES Setif and Enyimba as The Brazilians seek to secure their place in the last-four.

“They play similar to how Setif plays. They keep it simple, they are dangerous on set-pieces so we just have to make sure that we don’t create set-pieces or corner kicks,” he says while giving hints about what the last two results in this competition has done to their confidence.

“It means a lot to us because we defeated two teams that have won the Champions League before so it gives us confidence that we can do it. Even the coach has been saying that we are the best in the country and we just have to show on the field that we are the best. I think we always believed that we are a good team, it is just that we have to prove it now on the field.

“When you look at the players that we have now and even last season when you look at the players that were sitting on the bench like Teko Modise, Surprise Moriri, great players that have been in the game for a long time and you look at the players who are youngsters like Keagan it shows that Sundowns has quality and we are the best so we just have to show it on the field.”

Mbekile hopes they carry their fine form from last season as they seek to emulate Orlando Pirates.

“I think it is a plus for us the fact that we are going to be playing all the way (without a break). The momentum that we had from last season until now has great, we didn’t stop, we just continued with the way we left at the end of last season,” Mbekile says.

“Pirates are the best in South Africa because they have got the star so to be the best we also need the star as well. We have to aim high and they are up there so it is one of those things that we want,” he adds noting that the lasers and hostile crowd expected at the Petrosport Stadium on Sunday (19h30) will provide inspiration instead of scaring him.
