The Brazilians had it easy in their passage into the group stages after dismantling Seychelles part-timers La Passe 15-1 on aggregate with both legs played at Loftus after the Indian Ocean islanders choose to play their home game in Tshwane.
According to the CAF 5-Year Ranking used in determining the seeded clubs ahead of the group stages, Sundowns found themselves falling into Pot 2 with 46 points and were going to face any of Al Ahly (78), Wydad Casablanca (71), Esperance (58), and Raja Casablanca (54).
They have now been handed Al Ahly again.
Last year, Sundowns came out tops in a group featuring three North African clubs in Al Ahly (Egypt) and the Sudanese pair of AL Hilal and Al Merreikh but then came stuck in the quarterfinals against Petro du Luanda from Angola.
