Pitso Mosimane reveals how Mamelodi Sundowns' CAF campaign fell apart

Sundowns again crashed out of the continental club competition at the quarter-final stage, succumbing to record eight-time winners Al Ahly in their two-legged tie a few weeks back.

Mosimane has built up a formidable squad that has competed extensively on the continent for the last six campaigns, in which they have advanced to the group stages or beyond on five ocassions.

After exiting at the semi-final stage last season, The Brazilians maintained the core of that squad while adding two new faces to the fold – midfielder Sammy Seabi, who is currently out on loan at Stellenbosch FC, and striker Mauricio Affonso.

Affonso was expected to be the trump card in the club's hopes to go at least one step further to the final in this season's campaign, but 'Jingles' has since explained that the assortment of injuries suffered by the Uruguayan frontman is what ultimately derailed their CAF plans.

"Last year we signed two players, Seabi and Affonso, who got injured and killed our Champions League hopes. We signed him for Champions League," conceded Mosimane.

Sundowns now plan to add another striker to cover for Affonso as they go for African glory again next season, depending on the final outcome of the current PSL campaign.
