Weiler led the Egyptian giants to their 42nd Egyptian Premier League title, the quarter-final of the Egyptian Cup and the semi-final of the CAF Champions League before his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Mosimane was then roped in and has enjoyed a perfect start to life at the Red Devils with three league wins and a draw as well as a 5-1 drubbing of Wydad AC in the semi-final of Africa's elite club competition.

But questions have been raised why the former Anderlecht boss didn't remain to see out their quest for a record ninth Champions League crown, which he told Belgian newspaper HLN that the constant postponements during the pandemic forced him into a decision to return home with his family.

"Corona made everything difficult," Weiler explained. "The end of the competitions was postponed again and again, at a time when I missed my family, and for this reason, I decided to activate the release clause in October.

"I would have liked to complete the Champions League adventure with Al-Ahly, but my family and my health are a priority for me, which I see as a good thing.

"Now I am enjoying time with my family, my children are happy [that] I'm back with them and I have rediscovered the beauty of nature that I spend a lot of time in."

Weiler has been liked with moves to the Bundesliga and the Jupiler Pro League since his premature exit at the Club of the Century.
