Baxter has guided Chiefs forward in the league this season

Kaizer Chiefs remain the biggest threat towards causing any sense of discomfort for champions-elect Mamelodi Sundowns with a third of the season to play including the Soweto derby this weekend.

Under Stuart Baxter this season, Chiefs have fared better than they did the last term in the league having already pocketed 32 points with at least another 10 games to play while last year they ended up on 36.

Baxter hasn’t pleased all in the AmaKhosi ranks but he has already won more league games than the club managed all of last season with at least 10 games to play.

Chiefs have won nine from the 18 that they have played so far while last term they only recorded eight victories at the close of the 30 matches for the campaign.

Following the latest victory this past weekend, Baxter has been left feeling encouraged.

"The lads deserve a big pat on the back because this was not an easy game and it is before the derby," says Baxter.

"We have Pirates next so traditionally this (game against Baroka) is the one that you think ‘will they take their eye off the ball’.

"On both accounts, I thought we kept our discipline well and now we can take the positives out of this which I think were many and look forward to the derby," says Baxter.

AmaKhosi have a pending case emanating from their decision to go against the PSL and not honour two fixtures in December against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows due to covid-19 related reasons.

With those two games hanging they have been recorded as having played 18 games.

Whether they lose the points or those games are still played they will still have reason to chase Sundowns.

Unlike The Brazilians whose interests are spread over the league, Nedbank Cup, and Champions League, Chiefs only have the league to focus on and will still play the defending champions in May.
